Bitcoin climbed back above $80,000 on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, recovering from an overnight slide as U.S. stocks rallied the day after the midterm elections. At 3:26 p.m. ET (20:26 UTC), bitcoin traded at $80,159, up 3.2% over 24 hours, according to CoinGecko data cited by CryptoTicker. The Motley Fool's quote, from data provider FMP, showed $80,360 at 5:11 p.m. ET, up 3.35% on the day.

The rebound came less than a day after bitcoin dipped just below $76,000 early Wednesday, as CoinDesk reported. CryptoTicker said bitcoin first crossed $80,000 again at 10:05 a.m. ET (15:05 UTC).

What drove the move

Outlets pointed to several overlapping reasons:

  • Less political uncertainty. With the midterm results in, CoinDesk and the Motley Fool both said a key source of uncertainty had faded.
  • A broad market rally. The Dow was up 1,511 points at 3 p.m. ET, CryptoTicker noted. See our stock market close for Nov. 4.
  • Falling oil. CryptoTicker tied the rise mainly to oil, which it said traded below $93 a barrel for WTI.
  • Short squeeze. About $378 million in bearish crypto bets were forcibly closed in one hour as prices rose, according to CoinGlass data reported by crypto.news and cited by CryptoTicker.

Views on Washington differ. CoinDesk noted that a Democratic Congress is generally seen as less friendly to pro-crypto legislation, while the Motley Fool reported that Democratic lawmakers are said to be considering changes to the stalled CLARITY Act market-structure bill, in talks it described as preliminary.

ETF flows still a drag

The price bounce followed several days of money leaving U.S. spot bitcoin ETFs. Farside Investors data cited by Coinpaper showed net outflows of $398.6 million on Monday, November 2, and $115.6 million on Tuesday, November 3, with BlackRock's IBIT accounting for the largest Tuesday outflow at $95 million. Wednesday's flow figures arrive only after the U.S. close. We covered the earlier outflows in Bitcoin slips near $76,000.

What it means for investors

A swing from about $75,700 to above $81,000 within one day is a reminder of how volatile bitcoin is, even after it fell more than a third below its record. Forced liquidations can amplify moves in both directions.
