The Dow led because several of its heavyweight members rallied hard. Earlier in the session, Apple, Amazon and Microsoft were each up more than 6%, while Nvidia was down, according to Stock Titan's live coverage. Blue chips doing that much better than the tech-heavy Nasdaq is unusual, and it explains why the Dow's percentage gain was about twice the Nasdaq's.
The election backdrop
Democrats won control of both the U.S. House and Senate, based on projections by The Associated Press that CNBC cited, according to Stock Titan. CNBC's Election Desk projected the House result. Some Senate races, including Alaska and Mississippi, were still being counted Wednesday afternoon, TheStreet reported.
Oil and gold
Energy markets moved sharply. Brent crude was down about $10 a barrel and trading below $100 for the first time in weeks as of 1:46 p.m. ET, TheStreet reported. Earlier, U.S. crude was down more than 8% at 12:21 p.m. ET, according to CNBC figures cited by Stock Titan. Gold futures rose 2.86% to $4,052.90 an ounce early in the day, per TheStreet. What it means for investors
