Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) reported record third-quarter revenue on Tuesday, November 3, as demand for its data center chips nearly doubled sales in that business from a year earlier.

Data center drives the quarter

By segment, compared with the same quarter last year:

  • Data Center: $8.5 billion, up 97%
  • Client and Gaming: $3.7 billion, down 8%
  • Embedded: $1.1 billion, up 29%

Data center sales made up nearly two-thirds of total revenue. “We delivered a record quarter,” Chair and CEO Lisa Su said in the release.

Fourth-quarter outlook

AMD expects fourth-quarter revenue of approximately $17 billion, plus or minus 3%, with a non-GAAP gross margin of about 55%.

How the stock reacted

AMD shares rose more than 3% in regular trading on Tuesday, helping lift chip stocks and the Nasdaq. After the results, the stock gained about 6.6% in extended trading as of 7:00 p.m. ET, according to StockTitan’s market recap. After-hours prices can change sharply once regular trading opens.

What to watch

  • Whether data center growth holds up as AMD guides to another big step up in quarterly revenue.
  • The drop in Client and Gaming sales, the only segment that shrank.
  • Gross margin, which AMD expects to ease slightly to about 55% next quarter.
