Jobless claims and the Bank of England

First-time claims for unemployment benefits fell by 6,000 to 189,000 in the week ended October 31, below an estimate of 196,000, according to Labor Department figures reported by investingLive. Continuing claims rose by 23,000 to 1.718 million in the week ended October 24. Low initial claims mean layoffs remain limited.

Overseas, the Bank of England raised its key rate by a quarter point to 4%, its first increase since August 2023, in an 8-1 vote, AP reported via Euronews. One policymaker wanted a larger half-point rise.

What to watch

  • Friday: the October jobs report.
