Most of the week's damage came on Thursday, when the S&P 500 fell more than 4% in its worst day since the April 2025 tariff crash, Yahoo Finance said. Investors had dumped AI and chip stocks on worries that new rules could slow the construction of AI data centers after the midterm elections, Yahoo Finance reported.

Why stocks bounced, and why the Dow didn't

AI stocks recovered some of their earlier losses on Friday while the rest of the market was mixed, the AP said. Yahoo Finance noted that the semiconductor index bounced during the session but still ended the day lower.

The day's big economic news was strong. Employers added 165,000 jobs in October and the unemployment rate edged down to 4.1%, according to the government report cited by Yahoo Finance. Treasury yields stayed firm after the report, the AP said, and the 10-year Treasury yield was about 4.859% in a Yahoo Finance quote shown after the close. Higher yields make borrowing more expensive, which is one reason investors watch them closely.

For the week, the technology sector fund XLK fell about 7% and the energy fund XLE about 11%, according to Yahoo Finance.
